"price + performance = TOP" 2009-12-01
By Frank Ulbrich (Berlin)
After my old 15 "FSC Amilo Pro, from anno 2005, had reached so slowly but surely his well-deserved retirement, I decided to look around for something new.

My basic requirements consisted of:

- small and handy but not a Netbook

- upgrade at least 2 GB RAM + Ability to

- - medium to good battery life

Full keyboard

- not too loud (fans)

- cool look, should indeed be what the eye;)

- price below 450 €

I'm more the type who takes a lot of time looking for before I decide on something new. Thus my search began in September 09

After some time I had dealt with all sorts of offers, my attention was on the ASUS X5DIJ SX018L.

I have decided after long and careful consideration for it, to order this laptop from Amazon.

said than done ... On 25 November 2009 ordered, delivery was on 27 November 2009. Here, as always, a big kudos to Amazon! Super fast delivery and no shipping costs. It could not be better! Incidentally, the price for this unit was also at Amazon unbeatable. I have set myself available to all the stops, but could be found despite intensive search no better offer. Here, too, TOP AMAZON!

On unpacking the unit I was equally surprised the first time pleasant. Both Amazon and ASUS renounce the use of Styrofoam packaging. The entire package, to put on a little plastic sleeve in the notebook, is made of cardboard. In my view, very first class, we give the environment at least the chance to come with our legacy to some extent cope. Battery pressed in, start button:

to the device itself:

After unpacking Notebook is running!

The included Linux is somewhat similar to a web server console. After entering username and password you enter on the text-based configuration screen.

there my Linpus Linux distribution was not folding back so far, I know I have the Suse and Debian commands try around a bit. You can operate this system with a KDE interface, but the possibilities are rather limited. Linpus is a Linux distribution based on the Fedora system is based and operates primarily in China. Hence the nickname "Chinese Linux".

I assume that the supplied OS is more of an alibi OS.

use it will surely few buyers.

In my case from the outset have planned Windows 7 Ultimate as the OS.

Win7 The installation I turned out to be a problem. After changing the boot order in BIOS, the installation ran without incident.

After some driver updates, and installing my needed programs (MS Office, Photoshop, Firefox, etc.), I can say now with a clear conscience: I have invested my money properly. The installed software is smooth and clean. Win7 is from a performance index of 3.2, which is only on the Grafikleisung for AERO. All other components are rated with an average of 5 to 5.5. For an office laptop so more than good.

find very pleasing and user friendly I have the full-size keyboard with integrated numeric keypad.

The display is glossy, which is likely to work outdoors much more difficult, however, images and colors razor sharp. I personally find the screen as it is chic and you can adjust the brightness of the LED backlight in individual stages.

The notebook remains, even after several hours of operation, cool. My old Amilo could there ever be used as hand warmers;).

The battery was charging at me after the first 3,5! Hours. This performance is Unlike many other notebooks in this price range offers ample power.

The fan is relatively quiet for my terms and only occasionally.

If desired, the book will be relatively easy extended to another 2 GB Ram. The first bar is 2GB of RAM soldered on the board. There is the possibility of a further maximum of 2 GB RAM bolt lock it in the book. A total of 4 GB is used, more can not manage the motherboard. If you are not an absolute gross motor skills, upgrade the RAM should not be an unsolvable problem.

The device comes in noble carbon optics. A real looker! Unfortunately it is very susceptible to dust and fingerprints. The purchase and carry a soft microfiber cloth is highly recommended.

Unfortunately, I realized that the description on the Amazon site is not entirely accurate. The built-in Intel Pentium T4200 running at 2.1GHz not, but at 2.0 GHz. As positive but does report that the processor, despite its somewhat "outdated" 45 nm design little, at least developed noticeable warm.

The built-in RAM is a 800 MHz DDRII module, which runs only to 667 MHz. Lt. Asus is the use of the BIOS version. An update is compatible by the manufacturer unfortunately not made the prospect of shame.

Amazon says to the kind information to the not entirely correct description, that they get the information directly from the manufacturer and not all devices will be reviewed separately. That is, in my view absolutely understandable.

conclusion may I say: The laptop is absolutely ok and recommended. ASUS specifies the device as a smart all-rounder. This assessment, I agree. For this price, € 379 for me, I was expecting a small entry-level solution. I received the lower middle class. TOP!

Absolute Recommended!

"Very good computer for a excellent price. Recommended!"   2009-12-01
By Simone R. N. Silveira
What impressed me:

- Very silent and cool, Asus really did a good job in this area. I used at night, with complete silence over my legs, and I almost couldn't say it was turned on - noise almost zero and stay in a good temperature the hole time!!

- The Windows installation was extremely fast, and Windows worked very well on it

- Very good machine for the price, fulfilled all my expectations

What disappointed me:

- The drivers were not compatible with the new Windows 64bit version (I used the Ultimate). I had to download all from the internet. And I had to download one by one, and install driver per driver... it took me hours!! Today I would probably try the 32bit version...

The bottom line:

I bought this computer to my nephew, that is why a was looking for a good computer:

- to use internet, social network

- with a video camera for net-chatting

- good network connections (WLAN-N)

- reasonable capability to deal with music, video and photos

- and not for heavy games.

Also, he was going to use it more as a desktop computer, so I was not worried about how big or heavy it was.

For all this caracteristics the computer is really good, fits perfectly his needs and my pocket! :-)

Comments:

It doesn't come with a proper OS installed, so a put a Windows 7 64bits Ultimate right away and a was very impressed: in less then 30 minutes I was already surfing in the internet!

It was by far the fastest and one of the easyest Windows instalations I have ever done. All the graphics (aero) in the windows worked very well.

The only problem I had was with the Windows 64bits and the drivers suplied with the computer: they just don't work together... so I had to download from Asus website all the new ones. To download and install all took me 10 times more time than installing windows ...

I your needs are close to mine, then a really recommend buyng the computer.

"Good very quiet notebook" 2009-11-23
By Franz H. (Linz)
This device is particularly recommended if it must remain switched on continuously. Due to the extensive cooling keeps you cool - and the fan turns on extremely rare. The performance is very good. For computer games the notebook because of the graphics chipset is less geeeignet. The low-power graphics chipset is certainly an important reason for long battery life and very low noise level.

worth mentioning is the 2-year-pickup-return warranty, which gives the manufacturer.

Note: There is - as usual - an external VGA port. This connection has, unfortunately, no screws fixing. If you connect a projector, it happens so often that the VGA connector loose.

One is still struck: If the projector is plugged in, the laptop on when "waking up" from standby mode frequently to on the external VGA port. On the notebook LCD is then nothing to see and you think the device is not working. With Fn-F8, in this case returns to the notebook screen.

By Kevin Lepschy
I own this laptop for over a month and can only report positive.

This notebook is great.

It runs fast and is not warm and not loud.

I have Windows XP Professional installed and it runs very fast.

Next, I installed Windows 7 Enterprise (90days demo) and it runs perfect.

to play games it is also suitable.

strong buy recommendation. Operating system but you should own or buy one (Windows 7, I can only recommend)

"super top notch" 2009-11-12
By Ellen Hamel
As tens of others I can only say:

super-peak Excessive notebook. previously had a 5 year old Sony Vaio and am much happier with the Asus. Always thought so little money is only for scrap. I use the NB for the Office applications, image editing, website design, internet use look normal, regular and Webtv my DVDs run great, too. Super picture quality, fast response, keyboard is excellent - everything was already said positive. Seems as if I had a disgustingly expensive notebook. Installations (WinXP) were wonderful. Only I am running only VLC player for DVDs. But running just fine.

Habs since about 6 weeks and am pretty happy with it
